The exhibition “Memory Suitcase” presents works created by middle and high school students as part of an interdisciplinary educational project focusing on memory, history, and transmission.

At the heart of the project is a suitcase: a symbol of departure, uprooting, and exile. Drawing on the study of the Holocaust and past genocides, students were invited to reflect on violence, forced migration, and experiences of exile through the perspectives of history, literature, and artistic creation.

Working in groups, they designed “memory suitcases” inspired by real-life stories, transmitted memories, or elements of their own family heritage. Each suitcase thus becomes the testimony of a life, the trace of a journey, and the expression of a memory.

Through creations combining texts, objects, images, and symbols, the students explore what it means to lose a place, an identity, and a history—and what nevertheless remains: a shared humanity.

Presented as a collective exhibition, “Memory Suitcase” invites visitors to discover these moving stories and to take a new look at experiences of exile. It reminds us that behind every suitcase lies a unique story, and that together they form a fragile yet essential mosaic: that of our common humanity.

The project was carried out with artist and psychiatrist Francine Mayran and is sponsored by Heike Thiele, Ambassador of Germany to the Council of Europe.
